Retreat Experiences

Writing Workshops

We offer immersive, craft-centered workshops for writers engaged in sustained projects or developing new prose and poetry. Rooted in place, these sessions explore character, symbolism, conflict, and healing through generative writing and shared evening circles that deepen both the work and the community.

Daily ​Experience

Each day balances guided free-writing, quiet time for sustained work, and workshops with featured writers. Evenings close with shared readings and an intimate circle for listening, reflection, and community.

Karla Brundage

Karla Brundage continues to shape contemporary poetry by intertwining personal narrative, social justice, and transatlantic Black female solidarity—while also lifting emerging voices through her editorial and exchange work. She is the author of "Blood Lies: Race Trait(or" (Finishing Line Press, 2024), and the founder of West Oakland to West Africa (WO2WA), where she has led international poetry exchanges including "Sisters Across Oceans" and edited anthologies such as "Black Rootedness: 54 Poets from Africa to America" and "Colossus: Home." She is currently guest editor for "Tar Baby: Ghana" and publisher at Pacific Raven Press. A Pushcart Prize nominee, Fulbright Fellow, and VONA and Martha’s Vineyard Summer Institute alum, her work appears in periodicities, "Blind Persistence, "K"onch Magazine," and "Essential Truths: The Bay Area in Color, Black Fire this Time." She currently lives in Waimea, Hawaii and when she is not teaching she loves running, hiking and beaching.

Kathryn Takara

Kathryn Waddell Takara, Professor Emerita, is the recipient of the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Honolulu NAACP as an “Agent of Change.” In 2010, she was honored by the Before Columbus Foundation for her book Pacific Raven: Hawai’i Poems. Dr. Takara is the daughter of pioneer black veterinarian, author, and world-famous Buffalo Soldier, Dr. William H. Waddell, IV, VMD (1908-2007). Born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama, in the Jim Crow era, Takara is a longtime resident of Hawai`i. With an MA in French and a PhD in Political Science, until retiring as an emerita professor, at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa, she taught African American and African history, politics, literature, and culture, and organized conferences on minority issues. Takara delivers lectures and performs her unique ethnic, travel, political, and eco-poetry across the United States and internationally. Notably, she has appeared in China at Qingdao University and Beijing University of Foreign Studies; Bordeaux, France; Abidjan, Côte d`Ivoire; and Niamey, Niger. In 2018-2019,she gave poetry readings in California, New York, and Virginia. She often shares her poetry with audiences in Hawai`i, including this year at the Paliku Arts Festival—and at a jazz event featuring the music of Thelonious Monk, which she co-produced. Since retiring from her position as an associate professor at the University of Hawai`i at Mànoa–where she taught Interdisciplinary Studies and Ethnic Studies courses in African American and African politics, history, literature, and culture–she has continued pursuing her career as an author and publisher.

Allison Francis

Allison E. Francis, Ph.D. is a poet, playwright and co-writer of Mulatta—Not So Tragic, a collaborative renshi poetry project. She also is co-editor of both South Seas Encounters: Nineteenth-Century Oceania, Britain and America, and Scottish Literature of the South Seas: Critical Studies of Scotland and the Pacific. Her creative and scholarly work appears in anthologies and journals including African American Wisdom, Black Fire—This Time, and Bamboo Ridge Press’s Kīpuka: Finding Refuge in Times of Change, among others. An award-winning playwright and performance poet, Allison wrote and directed a stage adaptation of James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man and regularly writes, directs and produces original plays and monologues in Northern Italy. She has presented her work in readings, literary festivals, academic conferences and creative workshops, nationally and internationally. Her workshops explore poetry, performance, gender, and cross-genre storytelling. Allison holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in English Literature from Washington University in St. Louis, and a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. She teaches at Chaminade University of Honolulu, where she serves as Professor of English, Theatre and Performing Arts, and lives and writes in Hawaiʻi.

Marcella Bell

Marcella Bell writes emotionally compelling stories that span romance and young adult fiction. Her work includes The Wildest Ride, an Amazon Editors’ Pick, and The Rodeo Queen, which earned a starred review from Publishers Weekly. She is also a contributor to the Legendary Frybread Drive-In anthology, where her writing reflects her heritage as a Mvskoke Freedmen author. Whether writing romance or YA, Marcella’s stories center love, belonging, and the courage to claim one’s future.

Audrey T. Williams

Audrey T. Williams, MFA is a poet, author, and generative writing workshop leader who helps writers transform lived experience into vivid, durable language through craft, symbolism, and structured prompts. In her workshops, Audrey emphasizes metaphor with nature-based inspiration, curiosity, and imagination. She has taught poetry for wellness and caregiving at the San Francisco Writers Grotto, Maker Mentor Muse, Benicia Literary Arts Council, Alameda Island Poetry Group, Omnicom Health, the Berkeley Poetry Festival, and more. She is a regular presenter at the San Francisco Public Library and LitQuake. Audrey also serves as Co-Chair of the World Fantasy Convention to be held in Oakland in October 2026. Her poetry has been published in Peregrine Journal (Amherst Writers and Artists), Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine, FIYAH: Black Speculative Journal, and appears in A New Season, an anthology of Bay Area Poets, and beyond. Her first poetry chapbook, Attending Sorrow: Poetry and Writing Prompts for Living with Grief, is forthcoming Spring 2026.

Location

The Waiaka House is in Waimea on the West Side of the Big Island. The region is at the heart of Hawai'i's paniolo country known for its ranch life. At the Southern foot of Mauna Kea, Hawai'i’s tallest volcano, the scenery spans from the rolling “wet” side to the dry side with expansive views. With dramatic green hills, vast yet rugged pastures, and cool, crisp climate, the ranch town blends old and new to create a timeless atmosphere.

Off-Site Lodging & Getting There

Transportation

Shuttle to and from the airport is included in the tuition. Please arrange to arrive on June 9 and Depart June 14 to catch a free shuttle to Waiaka. 

 

Participants not staying at Waiaka Lodge are responsible for their own transportation to and from the retreat. Please note that there is no public transportation that travels to Waimea, though Uber, Lyft, or cabs are available at the cost of $120-$180 each way.

Alternate Lodging / Extend your stay

Kamuela Inn: Less than two miles drive from the lodge offers a group rate and includes a full breakfast. It is very nice, clean, with a local feel. Hidden away near restaurants. We are not sure if we will have a shuttle to this. 

Waimea Country Lodge: I don’t have a basis to either recommend or advise against this option, so I would suggest proceeding based on your own assessment and discretion.
