Sisters Across Oceans is the culmination of an eight-week poetry exchange between influential black women writers and leaders in Hawaii and West Africa. Centering on the themes of strong women, colonialism, post-colonialism, freedom, politics, motherhood, and love, the poems flow in renshi form, where each poem starts with the last line of each partner’s poem. Connecting women from the African diaspora across the world, the poems reveal that despite oceans of displacement, thin strands of history can be recovered through the reclamation of transformational stories and resonant voices.
